  2. surface of a liquid to behave as if it were
  3. covered with a weak elastic skin; this is why
  4. a needle can float on water. It is caused by
  5. the exposed surface's tendency to contract to
  6. the smallest possible area because of unequal
  7. cohesive forces between molecules at the
  8. surface. Allied phenomena include the
  9. formation of droplets, the concave profile of
  10. a meniscus, and the capillary action by which
  11. water soaks into a sponge.
